The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
